Edge effect: arises from the juxtaposition of contrasting environments. Used in conjunction with the boundary between natural habitats, but here extrapolated to the "environment" of the human psyche and culture.

James L. Knoll, IV, M.D. is the Director of Forensic Psychiatry, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He has worked as a forensic evaluator for state and federal courts, corrections, and the private sector. He has trained extensively with the country’s foremost expert in forensic psychiatry: (http://www.jaapl.org/cgi/content/full/35/2/154) Dr. Knoll has collaborated with both the FBI and the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) to publish guidelines for reducing Workplace Violence. His areas of interest include: Psychiatric Malpractice, Suicide Risk Assessment & Prevention, Psychological Autopsies, Stalking, Domestic Violence, Mentally Ill Offenders & Correctional Mental Health Issues, Sanity, Competency, Detection of Malingered Mental Illness, Violence Risk & Threat Assessment, Analysis of Inappropriate Communications and Forensic Psycho-linguistics. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters. He is co-editor of the Correctional Mental Health Report, and Editor-in-Chief for the Psychiatric Times (psychiatrictimes.com)
